No fewer than 12 secondary schools in Kano State have qualified for the maiden edition of the Sam Okwaraji Memorial Football Championship following the successful conclusion of the screening exercise.
The tournament, sponsored by the Sam Okwaraji Foundation in collaboration with the Nigerian Schools Sports Federation (NSSF), is scheduled to kick off on Friday at the Sani Abacha Stadium, Kofar Mata, Kano.
The winner of the state championship will represent Kano State at the national finals of the competition later this year.
Speaking ahead of the tournament, the Director of School Sports in the Kano State Ministry of Education, Kabiru Shehu, said the qualified schools include Rumfa College, Aminu Kano Commercial College, Kano Teachers College, Muhammad Vice Adamu Secondary School, Government Secondary School Gwale, and Government Secondary School Sharada.
Others are Sports Academy Kofar Nassarawa, Governor’s College, Government Secondary School Sabuwar Kofa and Government Secondary School Izazuddeen, among others.
Kabiru urged all participating schools to cooperate fully with the organisers to ensure a successful and hitch-free competition.
He also expressed appreciation to the Kano State Commissioner for Education for his continued support and commitment to the development of school sports, assuring that the ministry’s School Sports Section would sustain efforts to promote sporting activities across the state and the country.
