Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has successfully resolved the lingering dispute surrounding the Kano Central Senatorial ticket, paving the way for Ibrahim Shekarau to emerge as the consensus candidate.
This was contained in a statement issued on Sunday by the Governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa.
The breakthrough followed a high-level reconciliation meeting convened by Governor Yusuf in Abuja, where all aspirants and major stakeholders reportedly agreed to close ranks in the interest of unity, progress and the political future of Kano State.
Following the Governor’s intervention, eight aspirants voluntarily stepped down from the race and endorsed Senator Shekarau as the consensus flagbearer for Kano Central under the platform of the All Progressives Congress.
Kano Central, widely regarded as Nigeria’s largest senatorial district, comprises 15 local government areas with an estimated population of over 10 million people, making the consensus arrangement a significant political development with far-reaching implications for Kano State and the country’s democratic process.
Governor Yusuf commended the aspirants for placing the collective interest of the people above personal ambition, describing their decision as a demonstration of political maturity, sacrifice and commitment to democratic values.
He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to promoting dialogue, inclusion and consensus-building as critical tools for political stability and sustainable development.
The Governor also expressed confidence that the understanding reached among all parties would further strengthen unity and consolidate Kano’s political influence at the national level.
Earlier, spokesperson for the aspirants, Usman Bala, attributed their decision to Governor Yusuf’s intervention and the respect they have for Senator Shekarau.
According to him, all eight aspirants unanimously embraced the Governor’s peace initiative, describing it as a timely intervention that united all contending interests toward a common goal.
In his remarks, Senator Shekarau commended Governor Yusuf for facilitating reconciliation among the aspirants and thanked the contenders for supporting him and other APC candidates ahead of the 2027 general elections.
