The Kano State Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Engr. Marwan Ahmad, has outlined the major achievements recorded by the ministry under the administration of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, saying the government has transformed the state’s infrastructure landscape within three years.

Speaking during an interaction with journalists in his office on Saturday, the commissioner said the present administration inherited numerous infrastructural challenges but has made remarkable progress through strategic investments in roads, public buildings, and street lighting projects.

According to him, the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure, through its various departments, has implemented projects aimed at improving transportation, public facilities, and the overall living conditions of residents across the state.

Engr. Ahmad explained that the government classified road projects into different categories in line with Governor Yusuf’s development agenda.

He noted that while the administration inherited some ongoing five-kilometre road projects from the previous government, it expanded the programme by adding more roads, bringing the total number of such projects to 22 across the state.

He disclosed that the government also embarked on 37 major conventional road projects covering both urban and rural communities.

These include the construction of strategic roads and two major flyovers designed to ease traffic congestion and improve connectivity.

The commissioner revealed that the administration placed significant emphasis on upgrading public infrastructure, particularly government offices, healthcare facilities, schools, and judicial institutions.

According to him, the ministry identified over 30 public facilities for renovation and rehabilitation, including key government establishments such as Gidan Murtala and the Audu Bako Secretariat, to provide a more conducive working environment for civil servants.

He added that 10 hospitals were renovated before being handed over to the Ministry of Health for operation and management.

“Several court complexes, Islamiyya schools, Juma’at mosques, graveyards, constituency projects, and special intervention projects executed between 2023 and 2025 also benefited from the ministry’s intervention.

“Most of the projects have been completed, while a few are at various stages of completion, he said.

On street lighting, Engr. Ahmad recalled that many parts of Kano were poorly illuminated when the current administration assumed office.

To address the challenge, the government adopted solar-powered street lights as a sustainable alternative to diesel-powered systems.

“We have installed more than 12,050 solar street lights across Kano State, while over 20 of the five-kilometre roads have been fitted with solar-powered lighting systems,” he stated.

He further noted that regular maintenance of roads and public infrastructure is being carried out through the Kano Road Maintenance Agency (KARMA) and other relevant agencies to ensure durability and efficiency.

The commissioner said the government has also provided equipment and operational tools to enhance the productivity of workers and agencies responsible for implementing infrastructure projects.

Speaking on the state’s urban renewal programme, Engr. Ahmad disclosed that most projects under the first phase have either been completed or are nearing completion.

He added that preparations for the second phase are underway, while plans for a third phase have already commenced.

“Every nook and corner of Kano State will benefit from these projects. Our objective is to modernise the state and improve the quality of life of our people,” he said.

Commenting on the two ongoing flyover projects, the commissioner said the structures have been substantially completed and are awaiting final finishing works, including painting and landscaping, ahead of their official commissioning.

He also highlighted the importance of the Janguza-Karaye road project, describing it as a critical route linking five local government areas.

According to him, the government remains committed to completing the project because of its economic significance to farmers, traders, and commuters.

Engr. Ahmad expressed confidence that Kano would witness even greater infrastructural transformation in the coming years, noting that Governor Yusuf remains committed to sustained investment in projects that promote economic growth and improve citizens’ welfare.

He reaffirmed the ministry’s determination to continue delivering impactful projects that will further accelerate development across the state.
