Armed bandits in large numbers have killed 21 people in Bunkasau village, Zarummai Ward, in Bukkuyum Local Government Area of Zamfara State.

The attackers were said to have stormed the community on motorcycles, firing sporadically at residents.

They also abducted several people, mostly women and children, and carted away livestock from the area.

A resident told our correspondent that the attackers invaded the village on Friday night, armed with sophisticated weapons.

He said, “It is unfortunate. We woke up on Saturday and discovered that many residents had been killed. At least 21 people were killed, and we are still searching for many others who are missing. Many residents have been displaced following the attack.”

According to him, the 21 victims were later buried in a mass funeral prayer held in a neighbouring community.

“We are, in tears, appealing to the authorities, particularly the state and federal governments, to deploy more troops to our area,” he added.

When contacted, the Zamfara State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Yazid Abubakar, confirmed the incident but said the exact number of casualties was yet to be ascertained.

He added that additional personnel had been deployed to the area and that normalcy had since been restored.
