The Kano State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) has reiterated its commitment to strengthening community participation, accountability, transparency and ownership in the management and development of basic education across the state.
The commitment was reaffirmed during the training of School-Based Management Committees (SBMCs) and Social Mobilisation Officers (SMOs) on the 2025 Revised SBMC Guidelines held at Sararin Gezawa Special Primary School, Gezawa LGEA.
The Executive Chairman of Kano State SUBEB, Malam Yusuf Kabir, represented by the Director of Social Mobilisation, Aminu Dalha, monitored the training and interacted with participants to assess their understanding and implementation of the revised guidelines.
Speaking during the monitoring exercise, Dalha explained that the training was organised to strengthen the capacity of SBMCs and SMOs and ensure that they fully understand their roles, responsibilities and expectations under the 2025 Revised SBMC Guidelines.
He emphasised that functional SBMCs are essential to building strong partnerships between schools and their communities, particularly in identifying school needs, supporting school improvement initiatives and promoting accountability in the utilisation of resources.
According to him, the revised guidelines place greater emphasis on community participation, transparency, accountability, ownership and sustainability in school development.
He noted that the training would also enable participants to identify challenges affecting teaching and learning and work collaboratively with school authorities, communities and other education stakeholders to address them.
Dalha disclosed that the initiative was not limited to Gezawa LGEA, as similar training sessions were conducted in clusters covering all 44 Local Government Education Authorities (LGEAs) across Kano State.
He explained that the cluster-based approach was adopted to ensure wider coverage, effective participation and efficient dissemination of the 2025 Revised SBMC Guidelines to stakeholders across the state.
The approach, developed by the Kano State Universal Basic Education Board in collaboration with the Universal Basic Education Commission, Abuja, is also designed to create a pool of trained SBMC members and SMOs who can cascade the knowledge and skills gained to other stakeholders at the school and community levels.
He further explained that the knowledge acquired during the training would be disseminated through step-down sensitisation and training for other SBMC members and relevant stakeholders at the LGEA and school levels.
The Social Mobilisation Department, working with LGEAs, SMOs and other relevant stakeholders, will continue to provide monitoring, mentoring and follow-up support to ensure that the revised guidelines translate into practical improvements in schools.
The Executive Chairman, Malam Yusuf Kabir, therefore urged teachers, parents, traditional and community leaders, SBMC members and other education stakeholders to embrace the revised guidelines and see school development as a shared responsibility.
He called on communities to support teachers and learners, protect school facilities and promote accountability and transparency, stressing that effective community participation can contribute significantly to improved enrolment, attendance, retention, completion and learning outcomes.
The training is part of Kano SUBEB and UBEC’s broader efforts to strengthen school-level governance and create a more supportive and conducive learning environment for children across the state.
