From Mu’awuya Bala Idris, Katsina
The Katsina State House of Assembly has called on the state government to urgently commence the dredging and upgrading of the Bakori Dam in Bakori Local Government Area to unlock its agricultural potential and improve the livelihoods of farming communities.
The call followed the unanimous adoption of a motion sponsored by the member representing Bakori Constituency, Engr. Abdulrahman Ahmad Kandarawa, and seconded by the lawmaker representing Sandamu Constituency, Alhaji Sale Magaji Rimah, during plenary.
Speaker of the House, Alhaji Nasir Yahaya Daura, announced the resolution after members deliberated on the motion and directed the Clerk of the House to communicate the decision to the executive arm of government for necessary action.
Moving the motion, Engr. Kandarawa said the rehabilitation of the dam was crucial due to its strategic importance to irrigation farming and economic development in the area.
He noted that dredging and upgrading the facility would increase the capacity of the dam, expand irrigation activities, boost agricultural production and provide more economic opportunities for residents.
The lawmaker added that the project would contribute to strengthening food security in Katsina State while reducing youth migration to other parts of the country in search of employment opportunities.
He appealed to his colleagues to support the motion, stressing that investment in the dam would promote rural development and enhance economic growth.
Supporting the motion, the House Leader and member representing Danja Constituency, Alhaji Shamsuddeen Abubakar Dabai, alongside other lawmakers, endorsed the proposal, leading to its unanimous adoption by the House.
