Plateau State Governor, Barr. Caleb Mutfwang, has announced plans to upgrade the Plateau State Polytechnic to a University of Science and Technology, aimed at improving education and academic standards.

Speaking during the Democracy Day celebration at the Old Government House, Rayfield, Jos, Mutfwang said the upgrade is part of broader reforms to strengthen public institutions. He emphasized that only qualified academic staff would be employed moving forward.

At the Polytechnic, new facilities—including an administrative block, lecture halls, and a Human Resource Development Centre—were commissioned. Acting Rector Dr. Clement Chirman described the projects as a milestone for the institution.

The governor also commissioned 15 new Metro Buses, bringing the total to 30, aimed at easing public transport and reducing costs. He said the buses were purchased brand-new with state funds, not federal donations.

“These buses are Plateau’s way of returning subsidy to the masses,” Mutfwang stated. Commissioner for Transport, Hon. Davou Jatau, said the initiative helps commuters save up to N2,000 daily.

Mutfwang introduced Plateau’s first female Metro Bus driver, Ms. Luka Nambam, highlighting efforts to empower women.

Also commissioned were modern hospital facilities at the Plateau Specialist Hospital, upgraded roads including the Utonkon–Abattoir axis, and other projects in education, health, and infrastructure.

The governor reaffirmed his administration’s focus on development over politics, promising further upgrades to agriculture, tourism, and transportation sectors.
