Northwest University, Kano (NWUK), has elected Dr Aminu Abdulkadir Mahmud as Chairman of its Congregation Standing Committee at its 8th Congregation Meeting held on Wednesday.

The meeting, which took place at the Hafiz Abubakar Auditorium, City Campus, was the first Congregation Meeting under the leadership of the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Amina Salihi Bayero.

It brought together members of the university’s Congregation to review institutional developments and elect representatives to various statutory committees and governing bodies.

Declaring the meeting open, Professor Bayero emphasised the importance of unity, mutual respect and collective commitment among members of the university community.

She expressed confidence that the Congregation would continue to contribute to the institution’s administration and development.

A major highlight was the dissolution of the outgoing Congregation Standing Committee, chaired by Dr Lawan Idris, followed by the election of a new committee led by Mahmud.

In his acceptance remarks, the new chairman thanked members for the confidence reposed in him and pledged to provide effective and responsible leadership in discharging the committee’s responsibilities.

The Vice-Chancellor also presented a report on the university’s activities, achievements and major initiatives during the period under review, allowing members to assess its progress and deliberate on issues affecting its continued development.

The Congregation subsequently constituted an Electoral Committee to conduct elections into various statutory committees and university organs.

In the election for the Congregation representative on the University Governing Council, Dr Muhammad Nafi’u emerged victorious with 211 votes, defeating Dr Nazifi Umar, who secured 153 votes.

Members also elected representatives of various faculties to the Senate.

Those elected unopposed were Dr Muhammad Ibrahim Usman (Basic Medical Sciences), Dr Ishaq Muhammad Rabiu (Basic Clinical Sciences), Dr Auwalu Bello Ibrahim (Education), Dr Zawwali Sabitu Paki (Computing), Dr Sadiya Haruna Warshu (Clinical Sciences), Maryam Shehu Maimota (Humanities), Dr Abubakar Balarabe Kura (Law), Dr Muhammad Sabi’u Bako (Social and Management Sciences) and Dr Umar Labaran Bashir (Science).

Other election results included Dr Alkasim Hamisu Abdu for the Disciplinary Committee with 189 votes; Dr Aisha Hassan Sulaiman for the University Management Committee with 193 votes; Dr Lawan Muhammad Gimi for the Central Admission Committee with 193 votes; Dr Nura Abubakar Gwadabe for the Housing Committee with 188 votes; and Dr Tasi’u Tijjani Sabi’u for the Budget Monitoring Committee with 196 votes.

The 8th Congregation Meeting combined a review of the university’s activities with the election of academic and administrative representatives expected to contribute to institutional governance, accountability and continued development.
