Member representing Bichi Federal Constituency, Hon. Abubakar Kabir Abubakar, has commissioned 120 temporary health workers to strengthen primary healthcare services across Bichi Local Government Area of Kano State.
The health workers, recruited through the Kabir Abubakar Bichi Foundation, were commissioned during a ceremony held in Bichi on Saturday.
The event was attended by the Kano State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Abubakar Labaran Yusuf, and other dignitaries.
Speaking at the event, Hon. Abubakar announced that the Federal Government is working towards establishing a teaching hospital in Bichi to improve access to quality healthcare services.
He said discussions had already been held with the Minister of Health and the Chief Medical Director of Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital to facilitate the project, expressing optimism that it would receive final approval under the 2026 federal budget.
The lawmaker attributed the progress to the support of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, whom he commended for prioritising the development of Nigeria’s healthcare sector.
Hon. Abubakar, who is also the Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Appropriations, disclosed that plans are equally underway to upgrade Bichi General Hospital into a specialist hospital capable of providing advanced medical services.
According to him, the hospital has already been equipped with a digital X-ray machine, 40 oxygen concentrators, and four dialysis machines, while another four dialysis machines are expected soon.
He added that the project would be completed with the installation of a 64-slice CT scan machine.
He also revealed plans to modernise the hospital’s surgical and operating theatre to meet the standards of leading healthcare facilities in Kano State.
The lawmaker said the upgrades would help reduce pressure on major referral hospitals in Kano metropolis, including Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital and Muhammad Abdullahi Wase Specialist Hospital, Nasarawa, by bringing specialised healthcare closer to residents of Bichi and neighbouring communities.
Hon. Abubakar further appealed to the Kano State Government to upgrade the Danzabuwa and Saye Primary Healthcare Centres into General Hospitals, pledging to support the projects with infrastructure and medical equipment.
He commended the health committee chaired by Professor Yusuf Muhammad for conducting what he described as a transparent recruitment exercise for the newly engaged health workers.
The federal lawmaker urged the recruits to carry out their duties with professionalism, dedication, and integrity in serving their communities.
He also appealed to the Kano State Government under Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to absorb the 120 temporary health workers into the state’s permanent and pensionable workforce.
Hon. Abubakar praised Governor Yusuf’s investments in the health and education sectors, describing them as major contributions to improving the welfare and quality of life of the people of Kano State.
