Tragedy struck on Wednesday in the Gagi area of Sokoto metropolis, Sokoto South Local Government Area, when a young man allegedly knocked down and killed a traditional title holder, Alhaji Bello Hassan, the Magajin Garin Gagi.

Our correspondent gathered that the incident occurred when the suspect and his brother were reportedly racing their vehicles on their way to a horse-racing event on the outskirts of Gagi town.

According to sources, the two young men are sons of another prominent traditional title holder in Sokoto, Alhaji Bello Mayana, the Mayanan Sokoto.

Eyewitnesses described the incident as horrific, saying the impact severely mutilated the victim’s body.

It was further gathered that the deceased, who was reportedly returning from his farm at the time of the incident, was rushed to a hospital by operatives of the Unguwar Rogo Police Division in Sokoto metropolis.

His remains were later released to the family the same day and buried according to Islamic rites.

Reacting to the development, the District Head of Gagi, Alhaji Sani Umar Jabbi, Sarkin Yakin Gagi, expressed deep sorrow over the incident and called for justice to be served for the deceased’s family.

Efforts to obtain comments from the spokesperson of the Sokoto State Police Command, ASP Ahmed Rufai, were initially unsuccessful as he did not respond to calls placed by our correspondent.

However, the Police Public Relations Officer later confirmed the incident.

He stated that the case is currently being handled by the Unguwar Rogo Police Division and will soon be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for a thorough investigation.
