At least 10 people are feared dead and properties worth millions of naira destroyed following a devastating flood that swept through several communities in Yola South Local Government Area of Adamawa State in the early hours of Sunday.

The flood, triggered by a heavy downpour around 1:00 am, submerged homes, farmlands, and roads in Yolde Pate, Tashan Sani, Modire, Shagari Low Cost, and Sabon Pegi, leaving hundreds of residents displaced and in urgent need of assistance.

Eyewitnesses described the scene as “horrific,” with families trapped in rising waters and entire households washed away before dawn.

Deputy Governor of Adamawa State, Prof. Kaletapwa George Farauta, visited the affected areas to assess the damage and assure victims of the government’s intervention. She described the disaster as “heart-wrenching” and pledged immediate support.

Emergency response teams from the Adamawa State Emergency Management Agency (ADSEMA), National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), security agencies, and local volunteers have since been mobilised to evacuate residents and provide relief materials.

Also, the Adamawa State Police Command, in collaboration with troops from the 23 Brigade, Nigerian Army, has been deployed to assist in evacuation efforts and maintain security in the affected communities.

As authorities continue to monitor the situation, there are growing calls from residents and civil society groups for urgent humanitarian intervention, including food, shelter, and medical supplies.

Local officials say assessments are ongoing to determine the full extent of the damage, while climate experts warn that more rainfall could worsen the crisis in the coming weeks.
