Nigerians and people from neighbouring countries have been advised against risking their lives by travelling to Europe through the North African Sahara Desert in search of greener pastures.

A traditional ruler and philanthropist, Ambassador Dr. Chief David N. Onwere, the Sarkin Hausawa Igbo of Afrika, gave the advice in an interview with journalists at his office at Kofar Ruwa Auto Spare Parts Market, Kano.

He described journeys through the Sahara Desert as extremely risky, noting that many people have lost their lives along the route.

He therefore urged prospective migrants to obtain legal travel documents and explore lawful means of travelling abroad rather than putting their lives at unnecessary risk.

Amb. Onwere said Nigeria, as one of the largest countries in Africa, is blessed with significant economic and social potential but has faced various challenges since independence in 1960.

He noted that the country had experienced challenges ranging from the Civil War to communal clashes, violent crises, banditry and kidnapping in different parts of the country.

He congratulated Nigerians on the occasion of the country’s 66th Independence Anniversary and urged citizens to remain committed to peace, unity and national progress.

The monarch explained that the security challenges facing the country have historical roots, dating back to the Nigerian Civil War and continuing through communal conflicts, violent crises, banditry and kidnapping.

He called on the federal and state governments to strengthen internal security measures towards moving the country forward.

He also appealed to citizens to support government efforts aimed at promoting peace, unity and national development.

The Sarkin Hausawa Igbo further commended Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, for what he described as his commitment to protecting the lives and property of Nigerians and members of the African community.
