From Joseph Asegba, Yola

The ongoing Jail Delivery Committee, spearheaded by the Chief Judge of Adamawa state, Justice Hafsat Abdulrahaman, again gave freedom to twenty-six, granted bail to thirteen and convicted six inmates in Yola town Correctional Centre.

The committee led by the state CJ to the Correctional Centre visit is aimed at decongesting the facilities.

Among the convicts, ten were released, and nine had their cases downwardly reviewed out of one hundred and twenty-eight while sixteen out of two hundred and thirty-eight were released from the awaiting trial inmates.

Those discharged, some are conditionally released, having been placed as non-custodial, by which they were mandated to go and carry out community services of sweeping and weeding at their various local institution such as hospitals and police stations, among others.

The correctional facility has a five hundred capacity but is currently accommodating four hundred and forty inmates as open out.

Also, twenty-four are Inmates on death row, IDR, and five others are lifers.

While addressing the beneficiaries during the exercise, the Chief Judge, Justice Hafsat Abdulrahaman, said that their cases, largely civil, were considered less serious, hence the committees’ resolve to leverage its prerogative of mercy to administer the adjudication.

She charged them to be remorseful and behave themselves well having secured freedom.

Speaking earlier, the Yola town Correctional Centre, HT Ibrahim, appreciated the CJ and her team for embarking on the exercise, which he tagged “Freedom and relieve tour”.

While hoping that the exercise would eventually put smiles on the faces of some inmates, Ibrahim urged the lucky ones to be good ambassadors after leaving the Medium Custodial Centre.
