Bayelsa State was on Thursday thrown into mourning following the sudden death of the Deputy Governor, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, who reportedly collapsed in his office in Yenagoa.

Sources said the incident occurred around 1:30pm, prompting an emergency response that saw the deputy governor rushed to the Federal Medical Centre, Yenagoa.

Medical personnel were said to have made frantic efforts to resuscitate him on arrival at the hospital.

Family sources confirmed to journalists in Yenagoa that Ewhrudjakpo was pronounced dead shortly after he was admitted.

A close associate disclosed that the deputy governor appeared to be in critical condition when he was wheeled into the hospital’s emergency unit, adding that he had been under intense pressure arising from his official workload in recent weeks.

Although the exact cause of death had yet to be officially confirmed as of the time of filing this report, sources suggested it may be linked to a cardiac-related complication.

Efforts to reach the deputy governor’s media aide, Mr Doubara Atasi, for official confirmation proved unsuccessful.
