Cross River State has secured the hosting rights for the 2026 Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Championship, scheduled to hold from July 11 to 18, 2026, following significant investments in sports infrastructure by the state government.

Chairman of the Cross River State Sports Commission, Etta Lawrence Itanya, disclosed this while speaking with journalists in Calabar.

Itanya attributed the successful hosting bid to Governor Bassey Edet Otu’s approval and release of funds for the renovation of the State Box, as well as upgrades at the U.J. Esuene Stadium.

He said the improvements in the state’s sporting facilities demonstrated Cross River’s readiness to host a national football competition, adding that the championship is expected to boost sports development and economic activities in the state.
