From Musa Muhammad Kutama, Calabar

In a move to promote lasting peace, understanding and peaceful coexistence between farmers and herders in Cross River State, the Special Assistant to the state governor on Livestock and Ranching, Alhaji Sani Baba Gombe, has successfully brokered peace between Odukpani and Qua communities following a grazing land dispute.

In a statement issued to journalists in Calabar, the governor’s aide said the peace initiative was part of continued efforts to address farmer-herder concerns in Odukpani Qua Community, Odukpani Local Government Area.

“As part of our continued efforts to address the farmer–herder concerns in Odukpani Qua Community, Odukpani Local Government Area, I held a second engagement with the Clan Head, youth leaders and security agencies,” he said.

Alhaji Baba Gombe, who expressed satisfaction with the outcome of the meeting, said it had yielded positive results, with the community expressing willingness to lift the embargo on cattle movement, subject to agreed conditions.

These conditions include the establishment of a stakeholders’ committee, proper profiling of herders and cattle owners, and effective regulation of livestock movement into the community.

He disclosed that a misunderstanding had recently occurred between the communities over grazing activities but expressed happiness that the issues had been resolved.

According to him, a portion of land had been allocated for herders to graze their cattle without causing further conflict or misunderstanding with farmers.

“I appreciate the cooperation of the traditional institution, youth leaders and security agencies. Our commitment remains to protect farmers, promote responsible livestock management and ensure peaceful coexistence,” Alhaji Gombe said.

The peace initiative is expected to strengthen relations between farmers and herders in the affected communities while promoting responsible livestock management and peaceful coexistence in Cross River State.
