The 2025 Gombe Inter-Secondary Schools Athletics Championship and Grassroots Football Competition is set to kick off tomorrow, Tuesday, at the Patani Stadium in Gombe, the state capital.
Athletes, officials, and other stakeholders, including journalists, have already arrived in preparation for the much-anticipated sporting event.
According to the programme released by the organizers, Governor Inuwa Yahaya will lead the list of dignitaries at the opening ceremony.
The championship, organized by the Gombe State Athletics Association under the leadership of Ahmed Gara Gombe, is being held in collaboration with Green White Green (GWG) Sports Center Limited. His Royal Highness, Alhaji Abubakar Shehu Abubakar III, the Emir of Gombe and chairman of the Gombe State Council of Emirs, will serve as the Royal Father of the Day.
The competition will feature athletes from 73 schools across the state’s 11 local government areas.
Other distinguished guests expected at the ceremony include Professor Abubakar Ibrahim Njodi, Secretary to the State Government; Professor Aishatu Umar Maigari, Commissioner for Education; and Alhaji Adamu Inuwa Pantami, Commissioner for Youth and Sports.
Ahmed Gara Gombe, chairman of the Gombe State Athletics Association and director-general of the competition, noted that the State Ministry of Education and the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) are fully backing the initiative.
The SUBEB chairman, Alhaji Babaji Babadidi, along with Barrister Sani Haruna, ALGON Chairman and Chairman of Gombe Local Government Area, are also slated to attend the event.
