Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to improving teachers’ welfare and strengthening the education sector through sustained investment, recruitment, infrastructure development and capacity building.
The governor made the commitment while speaking at the 2026 World Teachers’ Day celebration held at the Kano State Government House, where he acknowledged teachers as critical partners in building an educated, disciplined and productive society.
Represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Umar Farouk Ibrahim, Governor Yusuf said his administration had, over the past three years, implemented several measures aimed at repositioning the state’s education sector and creating a more conducive environment for teaching and learning.
He listed the interventions to include the recruitment of additional teachers, construction of new classrooms, renovation of existing schools, and provision of teaching and learning materials.
The governor also said the government had increased funding for education for three consecutive years.
According to him, the administration was equally providing opportunities for teachers to upgrade their knowledge and skills, particularly in the use of modern technology and contemporary teaching methods, in recognition of the changing demands of the education system.
Governor Yusuf described teachers as more than classroom instructors, saying they serve as advisers, mentors and nation-builders whose influence extends beyond academic instruction to the promotion of discipline, good character and responsible citizenship among children and young people.
Also speaking at the occasion, the Commissioner for Education, Alhaji Ali Haruna Makoda, stressed the indispensable role of teachers in the development of the state’s education sector.
He assured teachers that the government would continue to take measures to improve their working conditions and provide the necessary tools for effective teaching.
The Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Kano State Chapter, Comrade Baffa Ibrahim, urged the government to sustain dialogue with teachers and respond to their concerns.
He said improved welfare and motivation would enhance teachers’ commitment and effectiveness.
Governor Yusuf further urged teachers and parents to pay closer attention to the behaviour and well-being of children, particularly in view of the growing danger of drug abuse.
He warned that illicit drugs posed a serious threat to the future of young people.
The governor said the state government had established an inter-agency task force to intensify the fight against the sale and use of illicit drugs, while also supporting the rehabilitation and reintegration of persons affected by drug abuse.
