The newly appointed Permanent Secretary in the Kano State Civil Service, Hajiya Hauwa Nuhu Wali, has commended Governor Engr. Abba Kabir Yusuf for what she described as unprecedented investments in the education sector, saying the administration has transformed learning conditions in public schools across the state.

Wali, a seasoned administrator and former Director and Principal of Government Girls College (GGC), Dala, made the remarks while reflecting on her nine-month stewardship at the school before her recent appointment as Permanent Secretary.

She said she had “no words” to adequately thank Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for his unwavering support, which enabled her administration to record remarkable achievements within a short period.

According to her, one of the major accomplishments was the provision of a reliable water supply across the entire school, including classrooms, hostels and toilets.

She noted that water now flows throughout the school premises, adding that residents of the neighbouring Gwammaja community also visit the school to fetch water because of the improved supply.

The former school director also praised the Kano State Ministry of Power and Renewable Energy, led by the Commissioner, Dr. Gaddafi, for responding promptly to the school’s request by installing a solar power system.

She disclosed that additional solar panels were also procured to strengthen the system, resulting in a stable 24-hour electricity supply to classrooms, staff quarters and students’ hostels.

Wali recalled that when she assumed office, the school premises were overgrown with grass, exposing students to mosquitoes and other harmful insects.

She said after notifying the Refuse Management and Sanitation Board (REMASAB), the agency commenced regular environmental sanitation and fumigation, making the school environment cleaner and healthier.

On academic performance, she said the improvements in infrastructure and welfare had translated into better learning outcomes.

According to her, none of the students failed the qualifying examinations this year, while the school also won about 11 trophies in various academic and extracurricular competitions within her nine-month tenure.

She further revealed that her request for the repair of students’ beds inspired the state government’s decision to rehabilitate bedding materials in boarding schools across Kano State.

The Permanent Secretary also commended the governor for improving the feeding programme in boarding schools, saying schools now receive food supplies in large quantities that can sustain students for weeks.

She added that Governor Yusuf had equally prioritised staff welfare, citing the recent retreat for more than 900 public school directors in Kaduna State, where participants were accommodated in quality hotels and received their allowances promptly.

While appreciating the support she received during her tenure, Wali said she was proud to have united members of staff into one family, fostering teamwork and mutual respect among academic and non-academic personnel.

She also lauded the GGC Dala Old Girls Association for its continuous support to the school and urged alumni associations of other public schools to emulate its commitment to educational development.

The former director expressed gratitude to all members of staff, including casual workers, for their cooperation and dedication, which she said contributed immensely to the successes recorded during her administration.

She also thanked members of the Gwammaja community for their goodwill messages and farewell prayers following her appointment as Permanent Secretary, describing the gesture as a reflection of the cordial relationship built between the school and its host community.
