The Kano State House of Assembly has adopted a motion calling on the state government to urgently rehabilitate and upgrade the Wasai Dam to prevent its collapse and protect lives and property in Gezawa, Minjibir and Ungogo Local Government Areas.
The resolution followed a motion of urgent public importance jointly sponsored by members representing the Gezawa, Minjibir and Ungogo constituencies.
Presenting the motion on behalf of the sponsors, the member representing Gezawa Constituency, Hon. Abdullahi Yahaya, expressed concern over the deteriorating condition of the Wasai Dam, warning that severe gully erosion along its eastern embankment poses a serious threat to surrounding communities.
He said the collapse of the dam could devastate several communities, destroy farmlands, damage road networks and disrupt the livelihoods of thousands of residents across Gezawa, Minjibir and Ungogo Local Government Areas.
According to him, communities including Wasai, Adarai and other neighbouring settlements would be among the worst affected if urgent action is not taken.
The lawmaker noted that, beyond the loss of agricultural land and crops, critical roads linking Minjibir, Ungogo and Gezawa could also be washed away, resulting in significant economic and social consequences.
He therefore appealed to the Kano State Government to immediately rehabilitate and reinforce the dam to prevent a major disaster.
Following deliberations, the House unanimously adopted the motion and resolved to forward its resolution to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for immediate action to protect vulnerable communities from potential flooding and environmental devastation.
