The Kano State Government has stepped up efforts to end recurring land disputes across its various local government areas.

The move was made public on Saturday in an official statement issued by Aminu Bello Sani, the Public Relations Officer of the Ministry for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs.

At a two-day seminar in Kaduna on Thursday, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Mohammed Tajo Othman, said the state is determined to equip local leaders with the tools to resolve disputes more effectively.

“Land disputes have been a recurring challenge in our state, often leading to conflicts and displacement. However, we now have the opportunity to change this narrative by equipping ourselves with the knowledge and skills necessary to resolve these disputes effectively,” Othman said.

The workshop brought together 44 council chairmen, secretaries, land officers, district heads, and traditional leaders to explore strategies for ending land conflicts.

Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Hajiya Fatima Adamu Barde, praised Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for consistently approving training requests that have strengthened local governance.

ALGON vice-chairperson for Kano South, Dr Abdulhadi Zubairu Chula, commended the state government, saying the seminar was crucial to addressing recurring disputes. “As local government leaders, we must use the knowledge from this training to resolve disputes and promote peace and development,” he said.

The Makaman Kano and District Head of Dawakin Tofa, who represented the Emirate Council, assured traditional rulers’ support and urged compliance with land laws to sustain peaceful coexistence.

Special Adviser to the Governor on Local Government, Hon. Garba Umar Durbinde, closed the session by urging participants to apply the lessons to strengthen peace and development across the state.
