The Kano State Government on Tuesday joined the global community in commemorating the 2025 World Toilet Day, with an extensive campaign rolled out across all 44 Local Government Areas to promote proper toilet use, sanitation and hygiene.

The event, coordinated by the Water, Environment, Sanitation and Hygiene (WESH) department under the Ministry for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, featured community outreach, awareness rallies and sanitation advocacy in markets, motor parks, schools and other densely populated areas.

Speaking during the commemoration, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Alhaji Mohammed Tajo Othman—represented by the Director of WESH, Alhaji Dauda Garba Falgore—said this year’s theme, “Sanitation in a Changing World: We Will Always Need Toilets,” reflects the urgent need to prioritise universal access to safe sanitation.

He said improved sanitation remained central to public health, noting that poor toilet facilities expose communities to preventable diseases. “This requires collective action from government, communities and individuals,” he added.

Falgore disclosed that Kano has recorded significant progress in sanitation, with 36 out of 44 LGAs certified free from open defecation. He attributed the achievement to ongoing investments in clean water provision, hygiene education and upgraded sanitation infrastructure.

He reaffirmed Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s commitment to advancing WASH programmes statewide, describing sanitation as a key driver of improved health outcomes, environmental protection and economic productivity.

Also speaking on behalf of all 44 council chairmen, the Chairman of Kabo Local Government, Alhaji Lawan Najume Kabo, commended the governor for supporting local councils to strengthen sanitation programmes.

According to him, several LGAs—particularly Kabo—have recorded progress in WASH interventions through borehole construction, rehabilitation of public toilets and sustained hygiene awareness campaigns. “Our efforts are yielding positive results,” he said.
