The Kano State Shari’a Commission has called on traditional barbers (Wanzamai) across the state to modernise their practice and eliminate unprofessional elements within the profession in order to protect public health and uphold Islamic values that place a premium on the sanctity of human life.
The Second Commissioner of the Commission, Sheikh Ali Danabba, made the appeal while receiving a delegation led by the Sarkin Askar Kano, Alhaji Muhammad Yunusa Na Bango, during a courtesy visit to discuss issues of public interest and strengthen cooperation between the two bodies.
He stressed the need for traditional barbers to adopt improved hygiene, safer practices and modern techniques that meet present-day health standards.
According to Sheikh Danabba, the meeting also examined critical social challenges confronting Kano State, including drug abuse, thuggery, insecurity and the need to sanitise the activities of traditional medicine practitioners, particularly in the area of street advertising. He said modernising the traditional barbering profession would enhance public confidence and contribute to better healthcare outcomes.
The commissioner further urged the Sarkin Askar Kano and members of his council to support government efforts to combat thuggery, phone snatching, drug trafficking and other criminal activities. He also called for decisive action against indecent and misleading street advertisements used in promoting traditional medicines.
In his remarks, the Sarkin Askar Kano, who is also the National President of the Unified Association of Traditional Medicine Practitioners, Alhaji Muhammad Yunusa Na Bango said the delegation visited the Commission to establish a stronger working relationship.
He assured the Commission of the association’s readiness to support initiatives aimed at promoting peace, security, public health and sustainable development in Kano State and across Nigeria.
Both sides pledged to deepen their collaboration in tackling social vices, improving traditional healthcare practices and supporting government efforts to ensure the continued development and well-being of the people of Kano State.
