The Poultry Association of Nigeria (PAN), Katsina State Chapter, has identified poor hatching, poultry diseases, and inadequate training as major challenges confronting poultry farmers in the state.
The State Chairman of the association, Alhaji Umar Abdullahi Yaya, disclosed this when he led members of the association on a courtesy visit to the Katsina State Project Coordinator of the Katsina ACReSAL Project, Alhaji Nafiu Mohammed Musa, in his office.
Abdullahi explained that the association operates across Katsina State to bring poultry farmers together and support members in overcoming challenges affecting poultry production.
He expressed confidence in the interventions being implemented by Katsina ACReSAL, particularly activities involving the distribution of poultry birds and feed to beneficiaries across the state.
According to him, poultry farmers in the state need further interventions from Katsina ACReSAL, especially in water provision, proper management and disposal of poultry waste, capacity building, and other forms of technical support.
The chairman noted that Katsina ACReSAL had also become one of the projects supporting poultry farmers through training and other interventions aimed at improving productivity and resilience.
He assured the Project Coordinator of the association’s willingness to collaborate with Katsina ACReSAL, particularly in identifying genuine poultry farmers who could benefit from the project’s interventions.
Also speaking, the Secretary-General of the association, Arc. Buhari Sodangi, provided insights into poultry farming practices, stressing the importance of understanding when, why, and how poultry farming should be undertaken for better productivity and profitability.
He emphasised the need for farmers to acquire appropriate knowledge and technical skills before venturing into poultry production, particularly in the area of management.
Responding, the Katsina ACReSAL Project Coordinator, Alhaji Nafiu Mohammed Musa, said the project was prepared to collaborate with the Poultry Association of Nigeria to achieve success.
He explained that Katsina ACReSAL advises beneficiaries and engages experts to provide technical guidance to poultry farmers during training programmes.
Mohammed Musa assured the association that its requests would receive appropriate attention, noting that collaboration with relevant stakeholders remains essential to achieving the project’s objectives.
The Project Coordinator further highlighted the importance of proper poultry waste management, urging farmers to adopt measures that would prevent waste from becoming an environmental hazard.
He explained that poultry waste could be properly managed and converted into useful resources and wealth, thereby providing an additional economic benefit to farmers while contributing to environmental sustainability.
He highlighted the importance of chicken manure on farms, noting that its proper application improves soil fertility, enhances crop productivity, reduces waste, and supports sustainable agriculture.
