The Kano State Zoological and Wildlife Management Agency (KAZOWMA) has celebrated the 2026 World Rangers Day at the Falgore Game Reserve in Doguwa Local Government Area of Kano State, with a call for collective action to protect forests and wildlife.
The event brought together dignitaries and stakeholders from Doguwa and Tudun Wada Local Government Areas, including traditional rulers, security agencies, government representatives, forest rangers, hunters and other stakeholders.
This was contained in a statement issued by Hauwa Adam, the Public Relations Officer of the Kano State Zoological and Wildlife Management Agency (KAZOWMA).
Speaking at the event, the District Head of Doguwa, who was represented by Alhaji Ado Yakubu of the Doguwa/Tudun Wada Constituency, called on communities surrounding the reserve to actively participate in safeguarding and protecting the forest.
He also appealed to residents to stop illegal hunting and the killing of wildlife, while urging them to desist from indiscriminate tree felling, noting that deforestation contributes significantly to environmental degradation.
The Managing Director of KAZOWMA, Hon. Musayyib Kawu Ungogo, commended the rangers for their dedication, hard work and commitment to protecting the Falgore Game Reserve and its natural resources.
Ungogo called on communities around the reserve to join hands with KAZOWMA in protecting the forest and wildlife.
He warned against illegal hunting, poaching, indiscriminate tree felling, bush burning and other activities capable of degrading the reserve.
He stressed that anyone found violating wildlife and environmental protection laws would face appropriate sanctions in accordance with the law.
The Managing Director further expressed his commitment to improving the welfare of the Agency’s workforce, particularly casual staff working at the reserve.
He pledged to work towards providing permanent and pensionable employment opportunities for deserving casual staff in recognition of their dedication and contributions to forest protection.
He also assured the rangers that the Agency would continue to provide them with the necessary tools and support to effectively carry out their responsibilities.
Speaking at the occasion, the Director of Wildlife, Alhaji Nura Lawan Doguwa, explained the significance of World Rangers Day, describing it as an important occasion to honour and appreciate rangers for their dedication and sacrifices in protecting forests and wildlife.
He emphasised the need to raise public awareness about wildlife conservation and reminded residents of the importance of protecting animals, plants and their natural habitats.
Also speaking, the Director of Zoo Services, Hajiya Hafsat Bello Adam, highlighted the importance of this year’s theme, “Guardians of a Changing Planet.”
She called on the general public to take collective responsibility for protecting the environment by planting more trees and avoiding indiscriminate tree felling.
According to her, trees play a critical role in combating climate change, preventing erosion and maintaining a healthy ecosystem.
She added that the 2026 celebration marks the 20th anniversary of World Rangers Day, making the occasion particularly significant in recognising the contributions and sacrifices of rangers around the world.
Captain I.F. Obioma, Officer Commanding the Nigerian Army Forward Operating Base (FOB), expressed the appreciation of the Nigerian Army to the rangers for their unwavering commitment and sacrifices in protecting wildlife and natural resources.
Captain Obioma said the responsibilities of rangers extend beyond conservation, as their presence and activities also contribute significantly to national security.
He urged the rangers to remain vigilant and continue working closely with the military and other security agencies.
He noted that effective collaboration, mutual trust and information sharing among rangers and security agencies would strengthen efforts to address security challenges and protect the nation’s natural resources.
During the occasion, awards and certificates of merit were presented to individuals and institutions that distinguished themselves through commitment and service.
Awards were presented to the Falgore Civil Defence Outpost, the Best Zookeeper of the Year and the Best Ranger of the Year.
Certificates of merit were also presented to selected staff members of the Agency in recognition of their contributions.

The event concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by the Director of Administration and General Services (DAGS), Alhaji Kawu Garba, who expressed appreciation to the royal fathers, distinguished guests, security agencies, stakeholders and other participants for honouring the Agency’s invitation.
He also prayed for the safe return of all guests and participants to their respective destinations.
