The Kano State Executive Council (EXCO) has approved projects and programmes worth N55.48 billion, with education receiving the largest share of the investment as the state government unveiled a fresh round of interventions in schools, healthcare, road infrastructure, water supply, housing and rural development.
The approvals were granted during the 40th Executive Council meeting presided over by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf at the Government House, Kano.
Briefing journalists after the meeting, the Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, said the Council approved projects totaling N55,475,406,487.82, reflecting the administration’s commitment to accelerating socio-economic development and improving the welfare of residents across the state.
According to Waiya, education accounted for the largest portion of the approvals, with numerous projects covering the renovation, rehabilitation and construction of schools, classrooms, ICT facilities, libraries, laboratories, furniture and solar-powered infrastructure across the state.
Among the key education projects approved are the N1.02 billion rehabilitation of Sani Bello Science College, Dawakin Kudu; N896.34 million for the rehabilitation of Science Secondary School, Dawakin Tofa; N312.29 million for the establishment of the Maryam Abba Yusuf Modern Learning Centre at Rijiyar Gwangwan; and N816.21 million for the settlement of outstanding feeding costs for boarding schools.
The Council also approved the rehabilitation of 31 luxury buses under the Girls’ Child Education Initiative, procurement of educational materials for special schools, and extensive renovation and expansion of secondary schools and technical colleges across several local government areas.
In the health sector, the Council approved the construction, reconstruction and upgrading of primary healthcare centres, alongside the procurement of medical equipment for hospitals and specialised health facilities.
The projects include new healthcare facilities in Kumbotso, Kiru and other local government areas, the upgrading of Gano and Dukawa Primary Healthcare Centres to Level II status, expansion of Kofar Na’isa Primary Health Centre, rehabilitation of Warawa Health Facility and provision of equipment for the Kano State Comprehensive Sickle Cell Treatment Centre.
Road infrastructure also received major attention, with approvals including N10.47 billion for the construction of the Ungogo–Minjibir Road, N3.67 billion for the Kofar Waika–Turba–Gidan Siminti–Dorawar Dillalai Road, N3.09 billion for road and drainage infrastructure at Singer Market, and an2.12 billion for the reconstruction of Ali Yakasai and Tukur Roads in Nassarawa Local Government Area.
Other approvals under the Ministry of Works include the installation of solar-powered streetlights, completion of ongoing road dualisation projects, construction of drainage systems, rehabilitation of public buildings and sports facilities, as well as additional works on the new Kano State House of Assembly complex.
To improve water supply and environmental sanitation, the Council approved more than N2.2 billion for diesel supply to water works, N558.1 million to offset electricity bills owed to the Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO), N300 million for annual desilting of drainage channels to reduce flooding, and over N4.1 billion for drainage construction, interlocking and landscaping projects across parts of the state.
Under the Ministry of Land and Physical Planning, the government approved over N6.5 billion as compensation for owners of properties affected by ongoing road projects, including the Kano Northern Bypass and Gaya Dual Carriageway. It also approved the acquisition of a property at Kofar Nassarawa for conversion into an Islamiyya school for girls and women.
The Executive Council further approved N1.169 billion as counterpart funding for the Rural Access and Agricultural Marketing Project (RAAMP), perimeter fencing at Kwankwasiyya City and Amana City housing estates, procurement of modern broadcasting equipment for the Kano State Broadcasting Corporation and capacity-building programmes for government information officers.
Beyond infrastructure, the Council approved the transmission of five health-related bills to the Kano State House of Assembly, including proposals to upgrade the School of Hygiene and Schools of Health Technology into colleges, review the Primary Health Care Management Board Law and establish a new Drugs and Medical Consumables Supply Agency Law.
The Council also endorsed Kano State’s participation in the Nigeria Community Action for Resilience and Economic Stimulus (NG-CARES 2.0) programme to expand social protection and livelihood support for vulnerable residents.
On security and public order, the Executive Council declared the practice popularly known as “Daba” a deviant and unacceptable social act, directing security agencies and relevant government institutions to intensify enforcement measures against the menace across the state.
The Council also received reports on the successful conduct of the 2026 Hajj exercise, presentations on the state’s master plan and opportunities in the global halal economy, as well as several awards presented to Governor Yusuf by professional bodies and civil society organisations.
Waiya said the decisions taken at the meeting underscored the administration’s determination to sustain investment in critical infrastructure, strengthen public institutions and improve the quality of life of Kano residents
