The Kano State Government has launched the new Islamic calendar for the year 1448AH, describing it as an important tool for improving public awareness of Islamic dates and helping Muslims plan religious activities and other affairs in accordance with the Hijri calendar.
The calendar was launched at a ceremony held at the Coronation Hall, Government House Kano with the Second Commissioner of the Kano State Sharia Commission, Sheikh Ali Dan Abba, leading the official presentation.
Speaking at the occasion the chief of staff Kano State Government House, Dr. Sulaiman Sani Wali who represented the executive Governor Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf described the Islamic calendar as an important instrument that would assist members of the public in organising their activities around the Islamic activities.
Dr. Wali said the initiative would provide the public with reliable information on Islamic months and dates thereby reducing confusion that could arise in determining important religious occasions.
He noted that accurate knowledge of the Hijri calendar was particularly important to Muslims because several major acts of worship and religious obligations are tied to specific Islamic dates and months.
Earlier, Sheikh Ali Dan Abba emphasised the importance of having a reliable Islamic calendar especially in determining dates connected with fasting, Hajj, Zakat and other significant religious activities.
He explained that the availability of the 1448AH calendar would make it easier for members of the Muslim community to identify important dates and plan their religious obligations accordingly.
The launch therefore marks another effort to strengthen access to accurate religious information and support the Muslim community in Kano State in observing important Islamic occasions based on the Hijri calendar.
