…as three women elected chairperson
From Musa Muhammad Kutama, Calabar
In a resounding victory, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has won all 18 chairmanship and 196 councillorship seats in the 2024 Cross River local government elections, held last Saturday.
The announcement was made on Sunday by Dr. Ekong Boco, Chairman of the Cross River State Independent Electoral Commission (CROSIEC), at the commission’s office in Calabar.
This election marks a significant milestone as, for the first time, three women have been elected as chairpersons in the local government areas of Ikom, Boki, and Bekwarra.
Their election is seen as a positive step towards greater female representation in local governance.
Dr. Boco urged the newly elected leaders to prioritize the development of their local councils and to govern with prudence.
He emphasized the importance of inclusivity, stating, “Be magnanimous in victory; carry your brothers and sisters along, as we are all of the same state.”
Immediately following the announcement, certificates of return were issued to the winners, solidifying their positions in the local government.
The APC’s clean sweep further cements its dominance in Cross River politics as the party prepares for the challenges ahead.
