In what was described as a historic move towards strengthening accountability in political representation, Muryar Kano Ta Kudu has organised a landmark gathering at the Coronation Hall of Kano government House where Senator Abdurrahman Kawu Sumaila, representing Kano South Senatorial District appeared before his constituents to account for his stewardship and unveil fresh plans for the development of the zone.
The event brought together Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, Emir’s of Rano/Karaye,rulers, Ulama, political leaders, members of the National and State Assemblies, business leaders, elders and other stakeholders from the 16 local government areas of Kano South.
Speaking at the gathering Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf commended Muryar Kano Ta Kudu for creating a platform that allows elected representatives to directly engage with the people they represent. He said the initiative would strengthen accountability and encourage leaders to remain connected to their constituents.
Governor Yusuf also commended Senator Kawu Sumaila and other elected representatives from Kano South for their commitment to constituency development, stressing that effective representation requires understanding the needs of the people and delivering projects and programmes that have a direct impact on their lives.
The governor assured the people of Kano South of his administration continued support for development initiatives in the zone. He also pledged that the government would do everything within its capacity to support APC candidates in Kano South and work towards securing victory for the party in the 2027 general elections, mostly to elect president Bola Ahmad Tinubu for second term bid.
In his response, Senator Kawu Sumaila expressed appreciation to Governor Yusuf for honouring the invitation, describing his presence as a demonstration of respect for the people and the importance of the gathering. He said the forum provided him with an opportunity to explain his achievements and future plans directly to the people who entrusted him with their mandate.
Kawu said the principle of leaders accounting to those they represent was consistent with the teachings of Islam and the demands of responsible leadership, stressing that public office holders must be prepared to explain their stewardship to the people.
The senator attributed some of the achievements recorded by representatives from Kano South to the cooperation and support provided by Governor Yusuf, saying the governor had created an enabling environment for them to pursue initiatives aimed at improving the welfare of their constituents.
Among the proposals he presented was the establishment of Kano Air, which he said should be professionally managed by a competent private-sector operator. He also advocated the reopening of the Nigeria-Niger border to boost trade and strengthen economic activities in the region.
Kawu further highlighted his legislative interventions, including his call for an investigation into alleged budget padding, efforts towards the completion of the Kano-Maiduguri road and initiatives aimed at finding lasting solutions to farmers-herders conflicts affecting communities in the region.
He also disclosed plans to intensify the fight against drug abuse, which he described as a major threat to young people in the North and across Nigeria.
He highlighted the proposed Federal Polytechnic Rano as another major development initiative, while appreciating Governor Yusuf’s support towards its realisation.
The senator said he had also pursued initiatives addressing inheritance-related disputes and protecting the rights of beneficiaries to ensure fairness and justice in the distribution of inherited property. He added that he had sponsored numerous motions and interventions at the National Assembly which could not all be presented at the gathering.
Chairman of Muryar Kano Ta Kudu, Sabi’u Abdullahi Usman, said the organisation was established to promote consultation, unity and continuous engagement among the 16 local government areas of Kano South. He explained that Senator Kawu was invited so that he could directly present his achievements and future plans to the people who entrusted him with their mandate.
The emir’s of Rano and Karaye, their Royal Highness Ambassador Muhammad Isah Umaru and Muhammad Muhammad Maharazu, respectively, commended Governor Yusuf and elected representatives for their contributions to the development of Kano South.
They also praised the governor for providing a platform for political leaders and representatives to engage directly with the people and account for their stewardship.
