The Plateau State Police Command has confirmed the death of nine people following an attack on a bus conveying passengers at Dungus, Kuru District, Jos South Local Government Area of the state.

The Command said it received a distress report at about 7:45 p.m. on September 13, 2026, that unidentified gunmen operating on a motorcycle had opened fire on a Toyota bus with registration number BUU 621 ZL while conveying passengers to Jos.

A statement signed and issued to newsmen in Jos by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Alfred Alabo, said the incident occurred in the evening.

Upon receiving the report, the Commissioner of Police, Plateau State Command, CP Ayodeji Faniyan, immediately mobilised a team of Mobile Police personnel, tactical teams, homicide detectives and forensic experts from the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) to the scene.

The Command said seven people were confirmed dead at the scene, while two others who sustained gunshot injuries and were evacuated to a hospital for medical attention later died, bringing the total number of fatalities to nine.

While commiserating with the families of the deceased and residents of the state, CP Faniyan condemned the attack, describing it as callous.

He prayed that God would grant the souls of the deceased eternal rest and give their families comfort, strength and the fortitude to bear the loss.

The Commissioner of Police has also ordered a vigorous manhunt for the perpetrators and directed police personnel to work with other security agencies to ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.

The Command reminded members of the public that the ban on commercial motorcycle operations within areas covered by the Greater Jos Master Plan remains in force and will be strictly enforced.

It added that operators of commercial motorcycles, popularly known as “Okada” or “Going,” would face the full weight of the law.

CP Faniyan urged members of the public not to panic but to remain vigilant and promptly report any suspicious persons or activities to the police or other security agencies.
