The Plateau State Government has directed the temporary closure of all public and private primary and secondary schools across the state, effective Monday, September 7, 2026.
The directive, issued under the leadership of Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, is a preventive measure in response to an outbreak of suspected diphtheria cases reported in some parts of the state, particularly Jos North, Wase, Jos South, and Bassa Local Government Areas.
A statement signed and issued to journalists in Jos on Saturday by the Commissioner for Information and Communication, Rt. Hon. Joyce Lohya Ramnap, announced the directive.
Accordingly, schools that have already resumed academic activities are also directed to close from Monday, September 7, 2026, and remain closed until further notice.
The government directed school proprietors, administrators, teachers, parents, and guardians to comply fully with the directive and ensure that pupils and students remain safely at home throughout the period.
It said the measure was necessary to protect the health and well-being of pupils, students, teaching staff, and non-teaching staff amid the suspected outbreak.
The government appreciated the understanding and full cooperation of all stakeholders as it continues to take appropriate measures in the best interest of the people of Plateau State.
It added that further information on the resumption of academic activities would be communicated to the public in due course.
