The Kaduna State Police Command has strongly condemned the mob killing of a woman in Maraban Jos, Kaduna State, over allegations of child theft.
The tragic incident occurred on Sunday, June 21, 2026, after the woman was accused of stealing a child, an allegation the police said was not supported by any evidence.
In a statement issued to journalists in Kaduna, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Mansur Hassan, described the act as “barbaric, criminal, and a direct assault on the rule of law.”
According to the statement, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Maraban Jos received a distress call at about 10:00 a.m. that a woman was being attacked by an angry mob over allegations of child theft.
“The DPO swiftly mobilised officers to the scene, rescued the woman, and took her to the police station for her safety and further investigation,” the statement said.
However, the situation later escalated when hundreds of people reportedly stormed the police station, overpowered the officers on duty, forcibly removed the woman from custody, killed her, and set her body ablaze.
The police disclosed that the victim was a native of Maraban Jos.
The Command said several suspects had already been arrested in connection with the incident, while efforts were ongoing to apprehend other persons involved.
“A comprehensive investigation has commenced, and all culprits will face the full weight of the law,” the statement added.
The Commissioner of Police, Rabiu Muhammad, warned that the Command would not tolerate jungle justice, mob action, or attacks on police formations and personnel.
He urged residents to report suspicious persons or activities to the police and allow due process to take its course.
The Kaduna State Police Command reiterated its commitment to protecting lives and property and ensuring justice in accordance with the law.
