From Musa Muhammad Kutama, Calabar
The Cross River State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting an independent media landscape as it joined the global community to mark the 2026 World Press Freedom Day.
The Commissioner for Information, Dr. Erasmus Ekpang, applauded journalists in the state for their vital role in society, describing them as key drivers of democratic development and public accountability.
In a statement issued today, and made available to media representatives in Calabar, Ekpang congratulated media professionals across the state and beyond.
He noted that the annual observance, instituted by the United Nations under the auspices of UNESCO, provides an opportunity to highlight the importance of a free and independent press in promoting human rights, security, and sustainable development.
Speaking on this year’s theme, “Shaping a Future at Peace,” the commissioner emphasized that journalists remain central to building societies founded on truth, justice, and harmony.
He said the media serves as a critical bridge between government and the people, while also acting as the voice of the voiceless.
Dr. Ekpang commended journalists in Cross River State for their resilience, professionalism, and commitment to ethical reporting despite prevailing challenges.
He added that their contributions continue to strengthen democratic governance and inspire public confidence.
Reaffirming the position of the “People First” administration, the commissioner stated that Governor Bassey Edet Otu remains committed to creating a conducive environment for journalists to operate freely and responsibly.
“The government will continue to support journalists and the Nigeria Union of Journalists as partners in the development of Cross River State,” he said, stressing the need for sustained collaboration in advancing the collective interest of the state.
He further urged journalists to remain steadfast in upholding integrity and professionalism, encouraging them to keep their voices strong in shaping a peaceful and progressive society.
World Press Freedom Day is celebrated annually on May 3 to promote the fundamental principles of press freedom and to assess the state of media independence worldwide.
