From Umar Danladi Ado, Sokoto

Residents of Sokoto State are still buying petrol at N1,430 per litre at Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) mega stations despite the Federal Government’s announcement of a price reduction to N1,350 per litre.

Our correspondent reports that NNPC mega stations across the state have yet to implement the announced discount.

The Federal Government had announced a reduction in petrol prices and directed NNPC mega stations to begin selling the product at N1,350 per litre.

However, the directive has yet to take effect in Sokoto, where the stations are reportedly continuing to sell petrol at the previous price of N1,430 per litre.

Some consumers interviewed expressed disappointment over the delay.

A commercial motorcycle operator said that as of Friday, NNPC mega stations in the state had not started selling petrol at the reduced price.

He added that some other filling stations had reportedly shut down rather than comply with the new directive.

A commercial driver, who requested anonymity, also expressed concern, saying residents were yet to benefit from the promised price reduction.

When contacted, the manager of an NNPC mega station in Sokoto, Abubakar Ahmad, said the station had not received instructions from higher authorities to begin selling petrol at the discounted rate.

Ahmad explained that the station was awaiting written directives from its headquarters before implementing the new price.

The delay means Sokoto residents are still paying the old rate while awaiting the implementation of the Federal Government’s announced petrol price reduction.
