The Sokoto State Government has signed into law a bill passed by the Sokoto State House of Assembly upgrading and renaming the State College of Basic and Remedial Studies as the Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko College of Technology and Advanced Studies.

A statement issued by the state Ministry of Higher Education disclosed that the bill was officially signed into law on May 14, 2026.

The Commissioner for Higher Education, Prof. Isa Muhammad Maishanu, made this known on Tuesday during a briefing held in his office.

According to the commissioner, the decision to rename and upgrade the institution was aimed at immortalising former Governor Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko in recognition of his contributions to the development of education in Sokoto State and Nigeria at large.

Prof. Maishanu explained that the institution had been upgraded to run Diploma and Higher National Diploma (HND) programmes in line with the present administration’s commitment to expanding access to quality and advanced education in the state.

He commended Governor Ahmad Aliyu Sokoto for taking the decision, describing it as a timely and deserving recognition of dedication to educational advancement in the state.

The commissioner further revealed that the governing council of the institution would soon be constituted by the state government to strengthen the administration and academic development of the college.
