The Sokoto State Government has declared Tuesday, June 16, 2026, which corresponds to 1st Muharram 1448 AH, as a public holiday to mark the commencement of the Islamic New Year.

Governor Ahmed Aliyu made the declaration in a message to the people of the state, urging Muslims to use the occasion to offer fervent prayers for peace and an end to the insecurity affecting parts of Sokoto State and the country at large.

According to a statement issued by the Director-General of Media and Publicity, Government House Sokoto, Abubakar Bawa, the governor described insecurity as a major challenge hindering Nigeria’s development and emphasized the need for collective efforts to address the problem.

“The Federal and State Governments are doing their best through sustained support to security agencies in their fight against banditry and other forms of criminality in the state,” Governor Aliyu stated.

He added that ensuring the security of the nation is a shared responsibility that requires the active participation of all patriotic citizens.

The governor reiterated his administration’s commitment to supporting security agencies in every possible way to combat banditry and other criminal activities across the state.

Speaking on the significance of the New Islamic Year, Governor Aliyu called on Muslims to engage in sober reflection and self-assessment, identifying areas of success and aspects of their lives that require improvement.

He also urged the faithful to seek Allah’s forgiveness through sincere repentance, noting that Allah is Most Forgiving and Most Merciful.

Governor Aliyu further assured residents of his administration’s continued commitment to promoting Islamic propagation and supporting religious activities throughout the state.

He wished Muslims in Sokoto State and beyond a peaceful, prosperous, and rewarding Islamic New Year, 1448 AH.
