The Voice of Concern Teachers’ Forum has accused the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) of failing to adequately represent Local Education Authority (LEA) primary school teachers in the affairs of the union.
Addressing journalists during a press briefing, the forum’s leader and spokesperson, Comrade Abbas Adamu Diso, expressed concern over the delay in conducting the NUT State Congress following the expiration of the tenure of the current state executive council.
According to Diso, the tenure of the state executive is expected to end in July, yet there has been no official announcement or indication that a congress will be held to elect new leaders.
He alleged that some positions within the union are constitutionally reserved for primary school teachers but claimed that these provisions have not been respected.
“We are appealing to the Executive Governor of Kano State, Engr. Abba Kabir Yusuf, to intervene and ensure fairness, justice, and compliance with the union’s constitution.
“We believe his intervention will help address our concerns and protect the interests of primary school teachers,” Diso said.
He added that the forum had made several attempts to contact the NUT State Chairman to obtain the union’s position on the allegations, but all efforts were unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report.
The Voice of Concern Teachers’ Forum called on the NUT leadership to organise the State Congress without further delay and ensure that LEA primary school teachers receive fair representation in the union’s leadership structure.
Efforts to obtain an official reaction from the Kano State chapter of the Nigeria Union of Teachers were unsuccessful before publication.
