A fatal road crash has claimed two lives and left two others injured along the New Mile 3 axis of the Gombe–Yola Federal Highway in Gombe State, today, Wednesday.
The accident involved a DAF truck with registration number XH 122 GME, three motorcycles, pedestrians, and several roadside shops.
According to a statement from the Gombe State Police Command, preliminary investigations indicated that the truck driver was attempting to enter the AA Rano Filling Station through a one-way access when the vehicle reportedly suffered brake failure.
The driver subsequently lost control of the vehicle, veering into motorcycles, pedestrians, and nearby shops.
The impact of the crash led to the death of Woman Police Constable Sharifa Gaina, attached to the Communications Department of the Gombe State Police Command, and an unidentified male pedestrian.
Two other persons, including the truck driver, sustained injuries and are currently receiving medical treatment.
The accident also damaged three motorcycles and several shops along the busy highway corridor.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Umar Ahmed Chuso, expressed condolences over the loss of lives and cautioned motorists against traffic violations.
He emphasized the importance of regular vehicle maintenance and strict adherence to road traffic regulations to prevent avoidable accidents.
The police said investigations into the incident are ongoing, while further updates will be communicated as necessary.
DSP Buhari Abdullahi, spokesperson of the command, signed the statement on behalf of the Commissioner of Police.
