As journalists in Cross River State joined their counterparts worldwide to celebrate the 2026 World Press Freedom Day, Dr Erasmus Ekpang has lauded media professionals for their dedication and resilience in promoting democracy and good governance.
World Press Freedom Day, set aside by the United Nations under the UNESCO declaration, is observed annually to highlight the role of independent journalism in advancing security, human rights, and sustainable development, while also addressing emerging issues such as digital rights and Artificial Intelligence.
Dr Ekpang, in his goodwill message, extended warm congratulations on behalf of the Government and people of Cross River State to journalists across the globe, with special recognition for practitioners in the state.
“As we gather for this momentous occasion, I extend my warmest congratulations to the courageous and dedicated professionals in Cross River State,” he said.
He noted that the 2026 theme, “Shaping a Future at Peace,” underscores the critical role of the media in building societies anchored on truth, justice, and harmony.
According to him, journalists remain the guardians of democracy, giving voice to the voiceless and serving as a bridge between the people and leadership.
“Through your tireless work, you illuminate the path toward peace and progress, especially in our dear state,” Ekpang added.
The Commissioner further praised Cross River journalists for their professionalism and commitment to ethical reporting despite prevailing challenges.
“To our journalists in Cross River State, I salute your resilience and dedication. Your contributions continue to strengthen our democracy, preserve our cultural identity, and inspire hope for a better tomorrow,” he said.
He also reaffirmed the commitment of the People First administration of Governor Bassey Edet Otu to providing a conducive environment for journalists to carry out their duties without hindrance.
Dr Ekpang assured that the state government would continue to support journalists and the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in all their activities.
“We are partners in the development of Cross River State, and we must continue to work together towards achieving this shared goal,” he stated.
He urged journalists to remain steadfast in upholding truth and integrity in their profession.
“As we celebrate this day, may your pens remain bold, your voices strong, and your mission guided by integrity. Together, let us shape a future where peace and freedom flourish,” he concluded.
