No fewer than twenty people died while trying to escape from armed bandits’ attack in Kali village of Gummi local government area in Zamfara state after their boat capsized in the river.

A resident in the area who pleaded anonymity told our correspondent via telephone interview that the bandits besieged the village at 1:00pm last night.

“The bandits last night were cited by the communities heading to Kalli village on motorcycles carrying heavy weapons to attack the area, which led the villagers to flee for their safety,” he said.

He said the boat was overloaded, and it capsized along Birnin Magaji River, which led to the death of 20 people.  He added that five corpses were recovered at Falale River, four at Birnin Magaji River while three were also recovered at Gadar Gummi River as they were trying to escape to Iyaka village.

“As I am talking to you now, 12 corpses have been recovered, and an additional six were also recovered who lost their lives as a result of their boat capsizing while struggling to escape from the bandits’ attack in Kalli village of Gummi local government,” he added.

He said the bandits terrorised communities of Kwammaka, Kwammaka Jibi, Kwammaka Mai Katsina, Kallin and  Kazura villages in Gummi local government under Birnin Magaji ward.
