Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State has defected from the Peoples Democratic Party to the All Progressives Congress, citing the need for stability, progress and sustainable development in the state.

The development was disclosed in a statement issued on Monday by the Director General, Media and Communication, Office of the Governor, Nuhu Salihu Anka, on behalf of the Zamfara State Government and the APC.

According to the statement, the decision followed extensive consultations with political stakeholders, elders, party leaders and supporters across the state.

It noted that the governor’s decision was taken after careful consideration and in view of the “overriding interest of stability, progress and sustainable development of Zamfara State.”

The statement also attributed the defection to the prolonged internal crisis, leadership disagreements and unresolved structural challenges within the Peoples Democratic Party at both the national and state levels.

“These challenges have continued to create uncertainty and distractions that could hinder effective governance and the delivery of democratic dividends to the people of Zamfara State,” the statement said.

The governor emphasised that his primary responsibility remains ensuring peace, security and development in the state, adding that the decision to join the APC would provide a platform for greater unity, stability and stronger cooperation with the Federal Government.

According to the statement, the final deliberation leading to the decision was held at the Government House in Gusau under the coordination of the Deputy Governor alongside senior government officials and key political stakeholders.

Lawal expressed appreciation to members and supporters of the PDP for their cooperation and support over the years, but noted that prevailing political realities and unresolved crises within the party necessitated the move.

He added that by joining the APC, his administration would continue to prioritise unity, security and accelerated development in Zamfara State while strengthening collaboration with the Federal Government.

The government also called on citizens, political leaders and party supporters to remain calm and peaceful as the state enters what it described as a new political phase aimed at promoting unity, stability and development.
