Gombe State’s Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Asma’u Muhammed Iganus, has announced plans to make the 2024 observance of the 16 Days of Activism a distinct and impactful campaign.
In preparation for the event, she has engaged stakeholders from civil society organizations (CSOs), community-based organizations (CBOs), and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to collaborate on innovative strategies aimed at combating gender-based violence across the state.
Commissioner Iganus emphasized that this year’s observance would be unlike any other, as she aims to lay a foundation for lasting partnerships and ongoing action in support of women and vulnerable groups.
“Our goal is to create a unique and memorable campaign that will drive sustained change in our communities,” she stated.
At a recent preparatory meeting, stakeholders proposed diverse activities, including media campaigns, community rallies, educational initiatives, and visits to correctional facilities and orphanages to provide donations and support. These ideas are intended to ensure the campaign resonates widely and reaches different segments of society.
Dr Erisa Sarki Danladi, a community advocate, highlighted the need for awareness programs in rural areas, where knowledge about gender-based violence remains limited.
“Community outreach efforts can play a crucial role in educating people on the effects and seriousness of GBV,” she noted.
Following the meeting, the Commissioner inaugurated a 25-member committee tasked with organizing the 16 Days of Activism, which will run from November 25 to December 10.
Representing the committee, Acting Chairman of the Association of Non-Governmental Organizations (ANGO), Maigari Lawanti, affirmed their commitment to making this year’s event stand out. “This year, we’re dedicated to supporting the Commissioner’s vision and ensuring the program’s success through unified efforts,” Lawanti remarked.
The 16 Days of Activism is a global campaign to end gender-based violence, and with a fresh approach and strong local partnerships, Gombe State is set to lead a meaningful and transformative observance in 2024.
