The Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) has named Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, as the recipient of its prestigious Media Friendly Award, in recognition of his remarkable support for press freedom and contributions to good governance in Nigeria.

The award will be formally presented during the NUJ’s 70th Anniversary Awards and Gala Night slated for Saturday, June 21, 2025, in Abuja.

The national body of the union, led by its President, Comrade Alhassan Yahaya, described Governor Yusuf as “an exceptional leader whose commitment to media advancement, democratic values, and public service stands out on the national stage.”

In a statement issued on Monday, the Kano State Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, hailed the NUJ’s decision, describing it as a “noble and timely recognition” of Governor Yusuf’s media-friendly disposition.

“This award is a testament to His Excellency’s unwavering commitment to transparency, accountability, and freedom of the press—pillars upon which any thriving democracy must stand,” the commissioner said.

He added, “On behalf of the Government and people of Kano State, we celebrate this honour and thank the Nigerian Union of Journalists for acknowledging the Governor’s impactful leadership.”

The NUJ stated that Governor Yusuf’s consistent engagement with journalists, respect for media independence, and support for the rights of practitioners were instrumental in his selection for the award.
