The Aminu Kano College of Islamic and Legal Studies has on Wednesday witnessed an unprecedented gathering as academics, dignitaries, and stakeholders from across Nigeria converged to celebrate its 50th anniversary in a colourful and historic ceremony.
The grand finale marked the culmination of a three-day series of activities organised to commemorate five decades of academic excellence and institutional growth.
Speaking at the occasion, the Provost of the College, Professor Balarabe Abubakar Jakada (Majidadin Kauran Katsina), expressed profound gratitude to Almighty Allah for the remarkable achievements recorded over the past 50 years.
He noted that the institution has laid a solid foundation for the provision of quality education, not only for individuals but for society at large.
He described the college as a pioneering institution in Nigeria, setting the pace for similar establishments across the country.
According to him, the college introduced a unique model of education that harmonises Islamic jurisprudence with modern legal and academic frameworks.
Professor Jakada further highlighted the college’s academic strides, particularly its outstanding performance in the recent accreditation exercise conducted by the National Commission for Colleges of Education.
He revealed that the success led to the approval of 21 additional course combinations, bringing the total number of NCE programmes to 52.
He added that Diploma programmes in Civil and Shari’a Law have also been upgraded to National Diploma status.
The provost disclosed that the college is collaborating with the National Board for Technical Education to facilitate a one-year direct entry into ND II for holders of Ordinary Diploma in Law and Shari’a.
On institutional development, he noted the establishment of eight directorates aimed at enhancing administrative efficiency.
He added that the Centre for Continuing Education has evolved into a full-fledged school offering eight degree programmes in affiliation with Federal University Dutsin-Ma.
Other milestones include the modernisation of laboratories, mosques, offices, and recreational facilities.
Professor Jakada also commended the Kano State Government for its sustained support, as well as the Kano Emirate Council for its guidance and encouragement.
Representing Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, the State Commissioner of Education, Ali Haruna Makoda, congratulated the College for attaining the milestone, describing it as a centre of learning and a catalyst for societal transformation.
“The college occupies a unique place in educational development over the last five decades. This legacy must not only be celebrated but sustained. It is not just a centre for learning but an engine of transformation and moral guidance,” he said.
In his remarks, the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, recalled with nostalgia the college’s role in nurturing distinguished personalities, particularly in the judiciary, describing them as symbols of justice in society.
The event attracted participation from over 15 tertiary institutions, including Yusuf Maitama Sule University Kano, Northwest University Kano, and Sa’adatu Rimi College of Education, among others.
Highlight of the celebration was the conferment of awards on notable personalities for their contributions to the development of the College.
Those honoured included Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, Professor Jakada, Abubakar Kabir Bichi, and philanthropist Ibrahim Sabiu Linda.
The Emir of Kano also commissioned a building named in his honour as part of the anniversary celebrations.
