The Nigerian Armed Forces team at the ongoing Africa Military Games, currently taking place at the National Stadium in Abuja, has won an impressive 11 medals in the Taekwondo events.
Over 1,625 athletes from 21 African countries, including Nigeria, Ghana, Tunisia, and Cameroon, are competing in the second edition of the games, which began last Monday. The competition features 20 different events.
The Nigerian team secured nine gold medals in Taekwondo, with five coming from the Poomsae events. Among the standout gold medalists are Mohammed Yusuf (men’s -54kg), Rejoice Bisalla (women’s -46kg), Chinenye Ibeh (women’s -49kg), and Glory Anam (women’s -53kg).
In addition to the gold medals, Daniel Alexander claimed silver in the men’s -58kg category, while Alassa Aminu took bronze in the men’s -63kg category.
Speaking to The Triumph correspondent at the Taekwondo event, Nigeria’s coach, Warrant Officer expressed confidence in the team’s performance.
“There is no doubt we would excel in the Taekwondo event, thanks to the intensive training and preparation the team has undergone,” he said.
In football, the Nigerian team secured a bronze medal, while the men’s and women’s basketball teams claimed silver medals.
Meanwhile, Tanzania emerged victorious in the marathon race.
Speaking to journalists at the various events, officials, including the Deputy Permanent Representative from the Embassy of Burkina Faso, commended the organizers for the well-coordinated and impressive execution of the games.
As of now, Nigeria leads the medals table with a total of 64 medals, followed by Algeria in second place with 24 medals. Tunisia is currently in third place with nine medals.
