The Chairman of the Yobe State Hajj Commission, Alhaji Mai Aliyu Usman Biriri, has expressed concern over the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN)’s plan to issue ATM cards to pilgrims for the 2027 Hajj instead of providing them with foreign currency in cash.
Mai Aliyu said the new arrangement could create difficulties for some pilgrims, particularly those who may not be familiar with using ATM or debit cards.
He disclosed this in an interview with our correspondent at his office in Damaturu, the Yobe State capital, as the commission commenced preparations for the 2027 Hajj pilgrimage in line with directives from the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON).
According to him, some pilgrims, especially those with limited knowledge of modern technology, may find it difficult to operate the cards effectively.
He therefore called on data collectors across the 17 local government areas of the state to educate intending pilgrims on how to use the cards properly.
He said adequate awareness would help pilgrims avoid financial losses and protect themselves from fraudsters while in Saudi Arabia.
The chairman also said Yobe State pilgrims who travelled to Saudi Arabia for the 2026 Hajj had returned safely without injuries or major complications.
He added that the commission had commenced the collection of payments and data from intending pilgrims for the 2027 Hajj.
Mai Aliyu commended Governor Mai Mala Buni for his continued support towards the success of the state’s Hajj operations.
He expressed optimism that with the support of the state government and proper preparation, the 2027 Hajj exercise would be conducted smoothly.
