The Coalition of Northeast Movement for Good Governance has rejected calls for an investigation into the alleged acquisition of properties in Abuja by former Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Prof. Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami, insisting that the allegations are not supported by credible evidence.
The coalition’s position follows a petition submitted by a group, Concerned Gombe Citizens, urging the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) to investigate Pantami over the alleged acquisition of properties in the Federal Capital Territory.
In a statement signed by its Secretary, Comrade Ahijo Umar, the coalition said that while public officials should be held accountable, allegations must be backed by verifiable facts rather than speculation or political considerations.
The coalition argued that the petition failed to provide documentary evidence, such as property ownership records, purchase details, or any other materials linking the former minister to any unlawful acquisition of assets.
“Allegations alone do not constitute evidence. Anti-corruption investigations should be based on credible facts and a prima facie case, not media campaigns or political accusations,” the statement said.
The coalition noted that Pantami served as Director-General of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) before his appointment as Minister of Communications and Digital Economy.
It added that he complied with constitutional requirements, including declaring his assets to the Code of Conduct Bureau while serving in public office.
It maintained that owning property does not automatically amount to corruption, stressing that claims of unexplained wealth must be supported by evidence showing that the assets are inconsistent with a person’s legitimate income.
The group also highlighted Pantami’s long career in academia and technology, describing him as a professor, researcher, author, and consultant with multiple lawful sources of income outside government service.
While expressing confidence in the EFCC and ICPC, the coalition said Pantami would cooperate with any lawful investigation if necessary.
It, however, warned against using anti-graft agencies to pursue political interests ahead of the 2027 Gombe State governorship election.
The coalition urged anyone with credible evidence to submit it to the appropriate authorities, insisting that the fight against corruption must be guided by facts, due process, and the rule of law.
