From Ahmad Ibrahim, Gusau

A Chief Correctional Assistant with the Nigerian Correctional Service, Zamfara State Command, Abdullahi Nura, has been rescued after attempting to take his own life by jumping into the Gusau Dam.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday after Nura, who is attached to the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Gusau, reported for duty before leaving for the dam.

Spokesperson for the Zamfara State Command of the Correctional Service, Mustapha Abubakar, confirmed the incident in a statement, noting that the officer had chartered a commercial motorcyclist to the dam before suddenly jumping into the water.

“The motorcyclist who conveyed him raised the alarm immediately, attracting the attention of security personnel stationed nearby. Nura was promptly rescued from the water,” the statement said.

It was further revealed that the officer was found wearing his official uniform and carrying his service identification card at the time of the incident.

Following the rescue, the Controller of Corrections in the state, CCS Musa Tanko, deployed a response team which conveyed the victim to the custodial centre’s medical clinic in Gusau for treatment.

“He is currently receiving medical attention and responding to treatment,” the command added.

As of the time of filing this report, the reasons behind the suicide attempt remain unclear.
