The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has successfully concluded the 2026 Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) Democracy Day Volleyball Championship, reaffirming the Armed Forces of Nigeria’s (AFN) commitment to physical fitness, esprit de corps and jointness among personnel.

According to a statement issued in Abuja by the Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, the championship was held at the Aguiyi Ironsi Indoor Sports Complex, Abuja, as part of activities marking the 2026 Democracy Day celebrations.

The tournament brought together male and female teams from the various services of the Armed Forces in a vibrant display of sportsmanship, professionalism and healthy competition.

At the closing ceremony, the Chief of Defence Staff, Olufemi Oluyede, commended participants, organisers and officials for the successful conduct of the championship.

He described the event as timely and significant, stressing the need for AFN personnel to remain physically, mentally and emotionally fit to meet the demands of military service and national expectations.

The CDS praised the exceptional skills, discipline and sportsmanship displayed throughout the competition, noting that volleyball promotes concentration, endurance, resilience and teamwork—qualities essential to military service.

“The true value of this championship lies beyond medals and trophies,” he said. “Its greatest achievements are the experiences shared, friendships forged and the spirit of unity strengthened among our personnel.”

General Oluyede congratulated the winners and encouraged other competitors to remain steadfast, emphasizing that every contest offers lessons for personal and professional development.

He was represented at the event by Sabiru Lawal.

Earlier, while declaring the championship open, Gideon Kachim described the event as a celebration of unity, professionalism and the camaraderie that defines the Armed Forces of Nigeria.

He noted that volleyball reflects the focus, discipline, teamwork and mental strength expected of military personnel in carrying out their constitutional responsibilities.

Rear Admiral Kachim added that sports remain a vital tool for building resilience, sustaining operational fitness and identifying talents capable of representing the AFN and Nigeria at national and international competitions.

In both the male and female categories, the Nigerian Navy emerged champions, defeating teams from other services to claim the coveted trophies and cash prizes. The Navy also swept the Most Valuable Player (MVP) awards in both categories.

Sports remains one of the key instruments through which the Armed Forces of Nigeria promotes jointness, strengthens camaraderie and enhances operational effectiveness.

Judging by the active participation, keen competition and strong esprit de corps displayed throughout the championship, the objectives of the event were successfully achieved.
