In preparation ahead for the Edo State Governorship election scheduled to be held on the 21st of September 2024, the Training Department of the Electoral Institute (TEI) has commenced five days of training for Electoral Officers and Assistant Electoral Officers (Operations) and HODs on “Management of Elections.”

A statement issued to newsmen in Abuja on Tuesday said that the 5-day training was commenced on Monday 22nd – Friday 26th July, 2024.

According to the statement, the objective of the training is to ensure participants understand the Strategic Managerial approach, Legal framework, Technological innovations, Processes and Procedures for the Conduct of Elections and demonstrate the ability to Organise and Manage Key Electoral Activities Effectively and Efficiently.

The Resident Electoral Commissioner, Edo State Dr. Sylvia Anugbum Onouha who represented the Chairman Board of the Electoral Institute, Prof. Abdullahi Abdu Zuru highlighted the significance of the training stating how it would serve to enhance the professional conduct and upscale the Managerial skills of Election Officers and Assistants Electoral Officers (Operations) on Election duty.

He stated further that the training is geared to upscale the Managerial skills as well as the knowledge of Guidelines and Regulations in the conduct of Elections 2022 especially in the areas of Accreditation of Voters, Voting Procedure, Collation and Transmission of Results.

The Director General of the Electoral Institute, Dr. Sa’ad Umar Idris in his welcome address, reiterated the need for trainers to acquit themselves with the processes, procedures and innovations of the Commission.

He further reiterated the key roles of the Electoral Officers and Assistant Electoral Officers in the conduct of Elections hence the need for this capacity-building workshop.

The Director of Training Dr. Binta Kasim Mohammed urged all the participants to pay attention to the training as they will be supervising the training of the Ad Hoc Staff at the local government level for the Edo Governorship Election scheduled for 21st September 2024.

Delivering his goodwill message, the Country Director of IFES recalled the synergy that has existed between the Commission and IFES over the years and reiterated the fact that the Commission through TEI has over the years worked tirelessly to build the capacity of the EOs/AEOs to add value to the electoral process.
